To add to this charmed life, he was the only male kin of his generation and, despite the fact that his mother disowned the family and cut all ties in her youth, pressure fell on him to be what the E.G.O. and family felt he should be. However, Naoya always knew that there was something else in his future that would not weigh him down to the old ties.

Youthful innocence quickly hardened as Naoya fell into the cold routine of his world. Battle and the use of his powers turned into the normal as representatives of other factions picked on the boy, but he turned out strong enough to survive each of them with scrapes and bruises. The one thing that Naoya did was tried to leave his opponents alive, as though to slow the cycle that seemed doomed to consume them all.

The older that Naoya survived to be, the more that he felt he had a mission to end it, and the more he craved to find the one who could save him from it. The battles tired him, but worse was having to see his sister, Haruna, suffer as the shadows human sins overcame her and forced the E.G.O. to bind her in a coma-like state. That hardened Naoya, stirring his resolve to find a way to end the war -- and it was the rise of the mindbreakers that gave him the means.

Since mindbreakers could control others, Naoya saw them as the opportunity to force a way into peace and make the fighting stop. He began to search for one that would have the power he needed, and he started by enrolling into school and mingling with humans who were ignorant to the strife that had torn his childhood apart. There he made his first friend -- Kusakabe Kaname -- and proceeded to fall into a life that felt almost normal (aside from his penchant to hold multiple part-time jobs and never get his homework done... creepily accurate to the norm).

There, he finally found the mindbreaker he was looking for. Kirihara Mana had the power sealed inside her, but Naoya tested her potential in battle and was defeated when Kaname -- mindbreaked into his Darklore power by Mana -- interceded to protect her. The power that had reawakened Kaname also touched him, a warmth that he found himself desiring to protect, making Mana a master that he accepted and swore to defend.

From there, though things got more dangerous, pieces began to fall into place. Naoya found others that Mana touched with her mindbreaker power and drew them together into a team that all desired to protect the warm light that she radiated. Even his sister was freed from her bindings by Mana, stirring the hope and determination that an end to the war was possible.

The battles would not end so fast, as the mindbreaker Kaoru proved with her soldiers, but the chance stood there and there was no question that Naoya would follow it, to find a world without the dark and the cold that had hounded his. To find the world that Kirihara Mana would bring them to.

[character abilities]:
Being a member of the E.G.O. (Evolutionary Girls Organisation -- wrong gender, he knows), Naoya is in possession of abilities that fall more into the 'psychic' realm, rather than the spells of the Arayashiki or the legendary bestial forms of the Darklore. Telekinesis -- force applied by thought -- is his specialty and Naoya applies it both offensively and defensively without much effort. Telepathy is better left to his twin sister, Haruna, as he is limited more to hearing what a telepath puts in his mind than projecting. And while he has minor skill at healing, he would rather beg off healing from Amou, who is far more naturally inclined to it.

[character personality]:

Naoya radiates the impression that he has it together. Confident and regarded as cool by classmates, he's neither the jock nor the geek, living in a happy medium that distinguishes him more by his penchant to hit on the cute, new girl and to beg out of classes and homework (due to work and the need to nap from too much of it). He skims along just below the radar threshold, for though he is known by many, he keeps himself from being notorious in the eyes of the faculty and others his age.

The thing to know about Naoya is that this, though founded by his personality, is mostly a series of airs designed to disconnect his reality from the normal. Having grown up in the era of a hidden war, this carefree attitude is a projection that disguises his motivations and determinations to find an end to the fighting and darkness of the Aquarian Age.

Around friends, Naoya tends to shrug off responsibility and spends a lot of his time playing the goof, filling silences with little comments that make others laugh or doubletake, all the while never taking up a serious role. This is the side of him that has no problem begging to copy the answers for last class's homework off of Kaname, not to mention the antics of teasing Isshin (spelling?) about his little crush on Mana, or smiling at the akward responses of Amou as he runs into him job after job. "Likeable" works best to describe him when Nayoa is allowed to relax himself and have that bit of fun his life otherwise denies.

Then there's Naoya of the E.G.O., where he is forced to become serious and show that he has a mind capable of calculating the actions of others and observing the little quirks that may betray them as anything more than human. Naoya is driven to survive, and has tried to become as ruthless as others, to not be like the little boy that asked his mother why they walked by someone who lay dying on the ground. This does not work too well, as he tends to strike in ways to miss vital organs, and when he does, he is first to try and heal the worst damage. Ending the war isn't going to happen by destroying everyone, but he thinks (and maybe even hopes) that if he leaves others alive, they'll do the same in the future.

There are threads between the faces that he has to show each world, a joker of sorts in both, and a survivor of different means. Naoya does not consider himself a fighter -- without Mana to mindbreak the limits of his power, he quips himself as the weakest of the five that serve her. But where he is not a fighter, Naoya is loyal and adaptable, doing his best in any situation to protect the girl who gave him the warm light that he needed to save him from this Aquarian Age.

[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: Where the manga ends (volume 5, chapter 25)

&concrit;
Everyone in this world needs a little guidance, even someone as confident as Naoya. Think he's doing it wrong? Right? Please, leave a shout here (screened, be anon if you like) and your feedback will be taken under consideration. As well, it will be greatly appreciated!
